Songs of the Century

Zweck und Entstehung

Songs of the Century ist eine 2001 von der Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) erstellte und veröffentlichte Rangliste. Sie umfasst 365 Songs und Instrumentalstücke aus vielen Genres und aus allen Zeiträumen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ihr Ziel war, die musikalische Kultur der USA an amerikanischen Schulen zu bewerben.

Für die Auswahl wurden Hunderte Politiker, Personen aus Musik- und Mediengeschäft, Lehrer und Studenten nach den wichtigsten Liedern befragt. Die RIAA wählte die Wähler aus. Die Liste ist daher eine von dieser Organisation zusammengestellte Auswahl und Rangfolge, nicht etwa eine nach Verkaufszahlen erklärte Übersicht.

Spitzenplätze

An der Spitze stehen „Over the Rainbow“ von Judy Garland auf Rang 1, „White Christmas“ von Bing Crosby auf Rang 2 und „This Land Is Your Land“ von Woody Guthrie auf Rang 3. Es folgen „Respect“ von Aretha Franklin (4), „American Pie“ von Don McLean (5) und „Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy“ von The Andrews Sisters (6).

Unter den ersten 20 befinden sich auch das Album „West Side Story“ der Original Cast auf Rang 7, „Take Me Out to the Ball Game“ von Billy Murray (8), „You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’“ von The Righteous Brothers (9), „The Entertainer“ von Scott Joplin (10), „Rock Around the Clock“ von Bill Haley & His Comets (12), „When the Saints Go Marching In“ von Louis Armstrong (13), „(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction“ von The Rolling Stones (16), „God Bless America“ von Kate Smith (19) und „Stars and Stripes Forever“ von Sousa’s Band (20).

Breite der Auswahl

Die Rangliste verbindet einzelne Lieder, Instrumentalstücke und mehrere ausdrücklich als „Album“ bezeichnete Einträge. Dazu gehören neben „West Side Story“ unter anderem „The Sound of Music“ (36), „Oklahoma!“ (66), „Porgy and Bess“ (97), „Kind of Blue“ von Miles Davis (113), „My Fair Lady“ (123), „A Love Supreme“ von John Coltrane (149), „Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band“ von The Beatles (167), „Hair“ (206), „Bitches Brew“ von Miles Davis (235), „Grease“ (300), „Show Boat“ (312), „Zodiac Suite“ von Mary Lou Williams (328) und „Birdland“ von Weather Report (294).

In den vorderen 100 Rängen stehen beispielsweise „Imagine“ von John Lennon (30), „Good Vibrations“ von The Beach Boys (24), „Yesterday“ von The Beatles (56), „Born in the U.S.A.“ von Bruce Springsteen (59), „Smells Like Teen Spirit“ von Nirvana (80), „Like a Rolling Stone“ von Bob Dylan (92) und „I Will Always Love You“ von Whitney Houston (108). Wiederholt vertretene Interpreten sind etwa Bob Dylan mit „The Times They Are A-Changin’“ (106) und „Blowin’ in the Wind“ (110), Marvin Gaye mit „I Heard It Through the Grapevine“ (21), „What’s Going On“ (65) sowie gemeinsam mit Tammi Terrell „Ain’t No Mountain High Enough“ (140), und Elvis Presley mit „Don’t Be Cruel / Hound Dog“ (68) sowie „Heartbreak Hotel“ (87).

Weitere Rangplätze

Auch die mittleren und unteren Ränge enthalten bekannte und unterschiedlich besetzte Titel. Beispiele sind „We Are the World“ von USA for Africa (121), „Rapper’s Delight“ von The Sugarhill Gang (162), „We Shall Overcome“ von Joan Baez (221), „Strange Fruit“ von Billie Holiday (273), „The Message“ von Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five (280), „Fight the Power“ von Public Enemy (288), „Another Brick in the Wall“ von Pink Floyd (296), „Rockit“ von Herbie Hancock (340), „Doo Wop (That Thing)“ von Lauryn Hill (359), „No Scrubs“ von TLC (361) und „Bills, Bills, Bills“ von Destiny’s Child (363).

Die letzten Plätze sind ebenfalls Teil derselben Auswahl: Rang 351 ist „One Sweet Day“ von Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, Rang 352 „I Hope You Dance“ von Lee Ann Womack, Rang 353 „Don’t Let Nobody Turn You Around“ von The Fairfield Four, Rang 354 „The In Crowd“ vom Ramsey Lewis Trio und Rang 365 „All Along the Watchtower“ von Jimi Hendrix. Die Liste endet somit nicht mit einer zeitlichen Abfolge, sondern mit der durch die Befragung entstandenen Rangordnung.
