  20. honor of inviting many of my colleagues to be plenary speakers at international events and honestly uh I had never experienced a response like the one I
  21. got from Leia her response was is this a mistake why me so let I didn't answer at the time
  22. but I would like to answer now um so why you first and foremost because you were nominated by
  23. your peers and that is to me the highest honor we can have in the profession secondly because of your work with the European Center for moral
  24. languages of the Council of Europe and what and your involvement in what is going to be perhaps one of the biggest Innovations in our field the first Piza
  25. assessment of English as a foreign language in 2025 that is certainly going to shake things up for us
  26. also because uh of your work as a language pedagogy language teaching professor at univ perja where you also hold uh you uh
  27. the Delegate for international relations so we seen you Globe Thro in around the world but perhaps and a personal level because you're Ana member who has
  28. over the years very G generously shared all that you know and all that you do and thus you have en reached our association and our profession so it is
  29. my honor on behalf of the aota membership to welcome you to your [Applause]
  30. plenary good morning everybody thank you Gabrielle for this wonderful introduction I move and uh thank you everybody it's a great pleasure for me
  31. to be here today with you and um um the title of my topic is teaching English and teaching other languages what's new um of course is a broad topic and um I
  32. would like to um discuss it with you just commenting on some of the snapshots that I've been um collecting all over the world in my missions that Gabriel
  33. mentioned as Rector Delegate for the international relations of my University the university for foreigners in perja in Italy and by the way Gabriel
  34. congratulations on your Italian it was wonderful yeah so um first of all I would like to
  35. start with this quotation that I particularly like the sum of human wisdom is not contained in any one language and no single language is
  36. capable of expressing all forms and degrees of human comprehension so uh the red thread of my talk uh is going to be like this English
  37. nowadays is essential is crucial is fundamental of course um is necessary but it's not sufficient as um as Professor David chrysta said um this
  38. Multicultural multilingual world is the natural way of life of three quarters of the human race and so nowadays we can say that monolingualism is not anymore
  39. um a strength but on the contrary is just a handicap that's what David Christa says and so that's what I can see every day in my University this is
  40. my um campus it's an international campus we have this mission to spread Italian all over the world uh and um we we have students from so many countries
  41. um and we can hear them every day speaking so many languages uh interacting each other and teaching each other bits of their language and bits of
  42. their culture and so um starting from this experience and my mission to spread Italian over all over the world um I'm trying to cover this topics in my talk
  43. today's educational landscape uh the need to embrace constant change diversity in Multicultural classrooms and reconceptualizing elt in
  44. The New Normal so today's educational landscape and this leads me to um show you some of the snapshots that I've been collecting
  45. in my missions so here you can see um a university class in China where there are um students from uh China but at the same time American students students
  46. from Japan all together um learning Italian but at the same time using English as a lingua franka here you can see some uh students
  47. in Australia um using of course English their L1 at the same time learning Italian uh peer tutoring peer lecturing in Italian and attending an Italian
  48. class Italian cooking class and speaking in Italian with of course the the chef and they are making pizza by the way here you can see some um uh Indian
  49. student teachers and um Italian students and teachers together uh in um uh an exchange program that I coordinated for for K which is one of my passion and um
  50. uh so they they were together all the time sharing views and and feelings and and emotions in India and in Italy and in the center you can see um the squal
  51. at Italia in New York the Italian School in New York that the pleasure to visit um where visitors are welcome not only in English and not only in Italian but
  52. in so many languages as you can see in in the picture and so uh the key words of our times key words of our times just we can see we can say that they come
  53. from this intern National background uh collected in the latest uh recommendations and the latest reports um by International organizations and I
  54. had the privilege as Gabriel said to be involved um at International level in in many of the groups uh producing this reports for example the um key competen
  55. key competencies framework 2018 what the second key competence uh is the multilingual compet Ence so replacing uh the the one in the foreign
  56. languages and then the 2019 Council recommendation for a comprehensive approach to the teaching and learning of languages here we have this strong focus
  57. of valuing linguistic diversity and the concept of language awareness which is so important so crucial so um the language awareness language linguistic
  58. Dimension not only a matter of uh L1 L2 or or exclusively languages but uh a transversal dimension of the curriculum in any subject at any school grade then
  59. the other recommendation Council recommendation 2022 uh the Intercultural uh this Intercultural the
  60. importance of plural lingual and Intercultural education for Democratic culture here once again this keywords Intercultural education Intercultural
  61. dialogue plurilingual education um which are also the keywords of the global competence framework oecd Pisa 2018 so as you can see there there's a a
  62. a red thread in all these documents and um last but not list in this in this slide of course uh a very important document that I guess is popular not
  63. only in Europe but all over the world which is the common European framework for reference companion volume um 2020 there's a revised version of the
  64. original one 2011 with a lot of new uh descriptors uh and I was involved in particular in the descriptor of online interaction and just from this important
  65. document we can say that um other important and keywords of our times for El and of course for teaching English but at the same time teaching the other
  66. language all the other languages first of all the action oriented approach which is strictly related to The Learning scenarios the need to create
  67. learning scenarios that should be authentic should be meaningful for our students so that they have the idea to use the language for meaningful
  68. purposes and the same time to have them develop mediation so mediation of concepts of context of ideas of text and mediation among different cultures and
  69. different languages so that they can develop their plurilingual competence PL plur cultural competence which are so crucial in our present
  70. times so embrace in constant change we can say that's another very important keyword and growth mind set is something that I'm sure is common in here
  71. everybody here so um Educators um language teachers Publishers um material writers illustrators um we uh we all share this um growth mindset that leads
  72. us us to embrace constant change and and this idea of course comes from a long ago from araus there's nothing permanent except
  73. change change is the only constant change alone is unchanging and just recently uh the Nobel Prize arari in this famous book
  74. 21st lessons for the 21st century for lesson 19 related to education says that change is the only con Conant and just we can we can see nowadays um with the
  75. um rapid evolution of AI and we have the wonderful open linary uh with Vicki this this um rapid change uh which we cannot keep up with and also Bowman um talks
  76. about the liquid Modern Life I particularly like this uh concept of liquidity in a liquid Modern Life there are no permanent bonds and then that we
  77. take up for a Time must be tied Loosely so that it can be untied again as quickly and as fruitlessly as possible when circumstances change as they surely
  78. will in our liquid modern society over and over again so this um concept of liquidity um is is really fascinating because this really really gives us the
  79. idea of this constant change uh that we are experiencing of course in elt in teaching other languages in our daily life in general and also another
  80. important document at International level that I would like to mention is the UNESCO futures of Education framework with the concept of learning
  81. to become and once again become gives us the idea of liquidity of change of continuous Evol Evolution uh this document um uh tries
  82. to imagine how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet looking at a horizon of 2050 so going Beyond agenda
  83. 2030 and we can read in this document no trend is Destiny multiple alternative Futures are possible a new social contract for Education needs to allow
  84. allow us to think differently about learning and the relationships between students teachers knowledge and the world and so is this social contract
  85. this new social contract that we should always keep in mind when planning when teaching um when teaching English when teaching other languages and during our
  86. daily life this is innovation this is innovation our growth mindset and we are all here to embrace Innovation that can be unpredictable so sometimes we cannot
  87. control everything um sometimes could be messy could be a bit chaotic but it's worth trying it because it can be highly rewarding and that's what we have be
  88. been experiencing in these latest decades in the field of elt in the field of language teaching in general uh and and I'm just going to mention here some
  89. examples with no ambition to be exhaustive of this latest changes this latest um Evolution um that we are we are nowadays living so the multilingual
  90. term the lingua franka status the L1 resistance Des centering elt the rise of the non native speaker
  91. teacher the need to interlock English more and more with the employability the need to break down silus in language lessons in favor of
  92. more interdisciplinary plur disciplinary and also multilingual lessons so diversity in the Multicultural classroom is the key
  93. feature that I'm sure we all experience in our classrooms um that becoming more and more multi-ethnic Multicultural multi- lingual and it's a treasure for
  94. all our Learners is a m Mutual enrichment for everybody and here this is a picture that I took uh in in India in um um
  95. university of chitkara in chandigar um if you talk to a man in a language he understands that goes to his head if you talk to him in his own
  96. language that goes to his heart and so Nelson Mandela says uh that we need to go uh to our students heart this is part of our mission trying always to go to
  97. their hearts and that's why I took this picture in in this clear lab by the way in chitkara that are particularly liked and as also UNESCO um by establishing
  98. the uh um uh International mother language day in 1919 um just um uh wanted to celebrate uh the the importance of our
  99. students home languages and that's what we are called to do uh every uh year on the F 21st of February um to celebrate our students mother language home langu
  100. language or languages and so from languaging to plural language languaging I'm sure that you're familiar with this uh verb
  101. languaging uh so language that has become a verb with the in form that once again gives this the idea gives us the idea of um progression of uh continuous
  102. of change of liquidity we may say and now plural languaging because of course the perspective is uh plural lingual and plural lingualism focuses on the inter
  103. relationships between languages in the social agents holistic Dynamic and integrated language repertoire based on a notion of paral competences that
  104. emphasizes the glass half full rather than half empty and acknowledges the lack of balance in people's inal Linguistics and
  105. interlinguistic profiles and I particularly like this idea of the glass Al full rather than Al empty which gives us this positive vibe let's say this
  106. optimism um that leads us to to embrace Innovation and um all this this new perspective about plural lingual multilingual competents and so plural
  107. lingual um action oriented approaches can be easily implemented in in our classes in our El classes in our class in general as according to this
  108. this language awareness um keyword uh because they are student centered they can be embedded in principles of social
  109. justice and they can encourage students to reflect on similarities and differences among languages and cultures in their repertoire and in the
  110. repertoire of their peers they can include critical discussions on language and provide opportunities for students to develop agency and be
  111. empowered to use their linguistic and cultural repertoire and here I'm mentioning Jim cins with um this famous uh Iceberg metaphor um saying that what
  112. actually is important is what lies behind the common underlying proficiency so the values the ideas the thoughts that our students have in there in in
  113. them themselves inside what comes out it's just um a matter of surface it could be in L1 in L2 according to the situation to the interlocutor to the
  114. social pragmatic context but it's just surface and so the um importantance is important thing is to try to uh value what is uh inside inside them and this
  115. leads me to tell you something about this project I was involved um in engaging with linguistic diversity uh I had the pleasure within um a research
  116. project to visit this um School in in Dublin Dublin 15 Sly B Kini um where so many languages are spoken and um I took this pictures there uh with um
  117. quotations from um Professor David little saying that Lang languages should be taught in relation to one another rather than in
  118. isolation and it's so nice to see in this school um how many posters how many um drawings in um all the languages spoken in in the class and um um within
  119. this project I could work with the author of this model uh which is also um mentioned in the council recommendation 2019 the healthy linguistic diet so in
  120. analogy with healthy diet the idea is to um expose our students as early as possible to um different uh languages different linguistic inputs in in so as
  121. many languages as possible and once again here some pictures from um the school in Dublin and other schools but I'm sure there are so many other schools
  122. all over the world that uh implement this this policies and these projects um and here there children singing in different languages and um producing
  123. artifacts in uh also of course enhancing their uh cultural background and school scape there is fundamental to show their language
  124. constellation uh to uh value the language of the week so uh the students are ambassadors are teachers um of their language for for the week uh enhancing
  125. of course their selfesteem we have the pleasure to implement this project also in Italy on um a sample of schools with the uh help
  126. of the uh authors of the model um we produced wonderful materials uh for our teachers uh like this toolkit uh to guide them to observe um the students um
  127. um linguistic um habit and to have them uh design effective Alti linguistic diet learning scenarios so from plural lingualism to
  128. plural literacies and here this is something that Gabriel mentioned my involvement in the projects of the European Center for Moder languages of
  129. the Council of Europe in grz and uh this definition of plural literate learner is the core of the project I'm involved which is called plural literacy teaching
  130. for deeper learning um a plural liter learner is one who has understanding of how language makes thinking and learning
  131. work and that's experience in meaning making problem solving and being creative in more than one language a right for all Learners and this is the
  132. right we need to guarantee our students to be able to express in their home languages or in the language that that they choose that they want at the moment
  133. and the right to learn as many languages as possible and this is the project uh I am involved um as as a as Ambassador and part of the consultancy team so we
  134. travel all all over um Europe um to to spread this model which is based on this um Ecology of learning and teaching so an ecological perspective uh including
  135. all the stakeholders orderer to Foster our students deeper learning which is the ability to transfer knowledge competence content from one known
  136. context into an unknown one and so that's what we are doing now we are reconceptualizing El in The New Normal together with all the other languages
  137. and in this unprecedented times after the pandemic so from the lessons learned that we learned during the pandemic um and here
  138. this piure uh once again in India took in India welcoming future which is actually present and once again this perspective
  139. this e ecological perspective uh here I I particularly like this infographic by too because we can see all the different stakeholders involved and Learners and
  140. teachers communicating teaching and touching each other in in in this infographic so all the stakeholders are so important to Foster deeper
  141. learning and so in within our as a part of our mission of course the student is um in the center and we need to pay attention to his or her positive
  142. emotions relations and empathy engagement and mindfulness and try toate create the best conditions the ideal conditions um to to Foster deeper
  143. learning and of course to guarantee their wellbeing so in order to just um reconceptualize El and try to um to
  144. rethink reshape this relationship between English and other language all the other languages what we could do is to keep an eye on different
  145. methodologies and strategies and I'm going to mention some um as part of my uh activity as as a professor of language teaching but of course with no
  146. ambition to be exhaustive but they can really help us of course according to the needs to our Target and um it's it's just a matter of choice of course social
  147. emotional learning uh the attention uh on the social emotional sphere of our students which is crucial then uh some other methodologies
  148. and strategies that I'm sure uh most of you are familiar with like task based learning project based learning phenomenon based
  149. learning synchronous online flipped learning Cooperative learning and with some examples just trying to lead us to break down silus in language lesson
  150. and C which is the one that I like uh most I may say I confess uh just um integrating content and language we can have um this C complex we can have C in
  151. English sort of in English Yi uh we can have clear L languages other than English like in it in Italy we have C in Italian in my university for
  152. international students but we can have all also clear a nonverbal communication sign language that is so empowered by um the uh companion volume of the
  153. CFR and again methodologies and strategies oracy as part of literacy in parallel with literacy en numeracy so we can foster our students um oracy through
  154. a lot of techniques like debate that is my favorite I've been working on debate in in Italy uh for a long time you organized Olympia and championship in
  155. different languages and it's a great way to foster a plural lingualism of course trans languaging trans languaging is so helpful in our classes and could be
  156. implemented both at strategic pedagogical um level but also from um an an instinctive one in fact trans languaging is an instinct is an instinct
  157. because first of all it can break down the traditional boundaries of languages and also because the way we speak the way we learn the way we teach is
  158. multisensory and multimodal and so we can say that trans languaging is an instinct and Des censoring elt I would like to just spend
  159. a few words about this I had wonderful um conversation with hbe Scholars in these days that I tful um this is really um a good way to
  160. contextualize um English language teaching that could be applied of course to any other languages and I was launching something like that for
  161. Italian Des centering Italian as a um second language as a foreign language and um you can really have the idea that um it's crucial to contextualize
  162. material strategies Technologies and also local languages are so important to Empower English and the opposite English is so important to empower local
  163. languages and just a few words about learning Technologies and AI uh this is my um uh research project I have the privilege to coordinate my University of
  164. course learning Technologies and AI are now the elephant in the room and um among the strategies and methodologies um we cannot avoid
  165. mentioning them in my um research lab we created our own AI that is called ID which is the translation in um the acronym of the Italian uh learning and
  166. dialogue in Italian um students can prompt International students willing to learn Italian can prompt the machine and pretend to chat or to speak because
  167. there's also text to speak speech recognition voice recognition um and they can pretend to be chatting uh in a restaurant or with peers or um uh in in
  168. a in a job interview and for us English is a scaffolding is a bridge language because as you can see when they click on the output which is in in Italian
  169. it's automatically translated into English as a bridge language and so what about assessment what about assessment assessment of course uh thanks to the
  170. use of AI may be reshaped in favor of a more and more plurilingual approach and here uh I'm I'm happy to share another uh experience
  171. um with widal which is the association um language tests in Europe uh and um I have the privilege to coordinate the seon CFR on behalf of my University um
  172. and here I'm mentioning this wonderful framework the ecological model of the learning context um that's that includes of course uh learning teaching and
  173. assessment in once again an ecological perspective and Alim has been working of course on the um uh production of a plural lingual assessment constract and
  174. there are already many examples of uh tests that are plural lingual I'm sure that uh um you you are familiar with with with some of them for example in
  175. Austria there's um um a test for vocational schools um fostering mediation among different languages or inpakistan for the presidential schools
  176. um a test the thinking on thinking skills allowing students to choose the language of the test among three languages so also assessment should be
  177. somehow re rethought and reshaped and uh ocdp are that Gabrielle um mentioned um last but not least I have the privilege to be involved in uh the definition of
  178. um the assessment framework pza 2025 that's going to be in English but it's the first step because more will come also in other languages and um uh just
  179. to mention how important also in this um framework is plur cultural and plural lingual education so even if um for now in this test target language is English
  180. but in profiling the learner it's highly con considered the pur is or Pur cultural and plural lingual profile so just to conclude I would like
  181. to leave you with this wonderful quotation this picture was taken in in another school in the Emirates uh optimism generates hope hope releases
  182. dreams dreams set goals in enthusiasm follows and I would like to wish you the optimism and the enthusiasm to make all your dreams for a positive change come
  183. true and thank you very much
