  1. Hello and welcome to marketing991.com. In this video, we are going to cover the topic on communicative competence. Before we proceed any further, please do
  2. note that we publish three videos daily on YouTube. So, please don't forget to subscribe to our channel. Now, let's start with what is communicative
  3. competence. Communicative competence is the capacity to understand and employ language efficiently to converse in proper school
  4. and social settings. It is a grammatical understanding of syntax, morphology, phonology of someone speaking a language. Linguistic involves the study
  5. and implementation of syntax, spelling and punctuation, language standards, vocabulary, etc. One has to be conscious of the base knowledge and expressions
  6. used. There should also be an understanding of cultural references, actions that are not verbal and laws of social communication such as politeness,
  7. recklessness, etc. Strategically, one has to employ techniques to become fluent in communication and bridge gaps in language. Moving on to the background
  8. of the term communicative competence. Delhims came up with the term communicative competence in 1966. It was a response to Nom Chomsky's concept of
  9. linguistic competence. The phrase was developed to respond to the recognized inaptitude of distinguishing Nam Chosky's performance and linguistic
  10. competence. Moving on to models of communicative competence. The concept of communicative competence
  11. is among the many theories which form the communicative approach for teaching a foreign language. There is a minimum of three basic models. Let's look at
  12. them briefly. The first one by Canel and Swain describe communicative competence with the help of three components. First being grammatical competence. Next,
  13. social linguistic competence as in the appropriateness. Third, strategic competence as in the appropriate use of communication strategies and a model
  14. developed later by Canel while borrowed some features from social linguistic competence on the fourth competence for terms disclosure competence. The second
  15. model where social cultural content is described with more detail was by Celeste Tony and Thorrell in 1995. As they were concerned, communicative
  16. competence involved linguistic, strategic, social, cultural, actional and disclosure competence. As you can see, there's some overlap between
  17. earlier model and this model. And finally came the Bachman and Palmer's model. A third model completely employed in Canada for federal language teaching
  18. is by Bachman and Palmer's model. According to them the pivotal trait is the language ability that is made up of two broad fields that is the language
  19. knowledge and the strategic competence. Moving on to a comparison of these models. Canel and swell model is quite simple. However, this model has been
  20. prominent in the areas of foreign and second language attainment and language testing for upwards of 10 years. Also, the employment of this model or
  21. reference to it has persisted although bashman and palmers put forth a model that is a more extensive model of communicative competence. Swain and
  22. Kennel's model is easy to implement. This might be why communicative competence researchers employ it even now. Now moving on to the broad
  23. components of communicative competence. First linguistic competence. It is a grasp over the language or in the other words vocabulary and grammar. It also
  24. includes knowledge of written representation that is orthography and script. The grammar component involves first the recognition of the sounds and
  25. how they are pronounced. Next how meaning is passed on through language. Next, the laws that decide the patterns of phrases and words to build sentences,
  26. creating words through inflection and derivation. And finally, the laws of sound interactions and patterns. Moving on to the second component that
  27. is social linguistic competence. It is the understanding of social cultural laws of use such as the knowledge of how to respond to and use language
  28. correctly. In this appropriateness stems from first understanding how a particular attitude is shown, what is the politically correct way to describe
  29. something? the politeness signs involved in each instance and the taboos of different culture etc. Moving on to the third competence that is disclosure
  30. competence. It is the understanding comprehension and production of written text of verbal forms through the medium of listening, reading and speaking and
  31. writing. Moving further, it is understanding of how to bring together language structures to form a comprehensible and co written or oral
  32. text of various kinds. Therefore, disclosure competence involves organizing sentences, phrases and words to form newspaper articles, email
  33. messages, poetry, speech conversations, etc. And then comes the strategic competence. It is the capacity to identify and fix communication
  34. breakdowns after, during or before they take place. Example, the speaker might not know a particular word. They might decide to either inquire the equivalent
  35. in the desired language or paraphrase. While communicating, background noise and other things might deter communication and as a result, the
  36. speaker must be aware of the process. The communication might fail because of external reasons like interruptions or because of a misunderstanding.
  37. Ultimately, the speaker should be able to restore communication. These approaches might be request for slower speech, clarification, repetition or
  38. taking turns in conversation, employing gestures, etc. So that's it folks. This brings an end to the topic on communicative competence. These are some
