- tiny difference can change the entire message. Let's jump into the quick explanation. The denotation of a word is its literal
- dictionary definition without any emotional or cultural meaning. You can say denotation is the basic and direct meaning you would find in a
- dictionary. On the other hand, the connotation of a word refers to the emotional, cultural or suggested meaning that goes beyond
- its literal definition. It can be positive, negative, or neutral depending on how the word is used and understood in context.
- You can think of connotation as the feeling or idea a word brings to mind. For example, let's take a word snake.
- Its denotative meaning is a legless reptile. While connotative meaning is a dishonest or dangerous person used in negative
- sense, cheap. Its literal meaning is low in price. While its conitative meaning is low in
- quality or in trustworthy again in negative sense. Childish dictionary meaning is related to
- behavior of a child. While connotative meaning can be in both ways innocent or pure positive and immature or silly negative
- fat. Its denotative meaning is larger in body size. It can be offensive or harsh if you say
- fat to anybody. Mental its literal meaning is related to the
- mind. While in slang it's offensive or dismissive implying someone is crazy,
- skinny. Literal meaning is very thin, while connotative meaning is unhealthy or underweight.
