- the primary projection that is used on websites such as Google Maps, Open Street Maps, and other websites. And the reason it is commonly used on these
- websites is because it is very easy to tile and in smaller scales, it maintains a constant scale to areas around it. However, as you probably know, the
- Mercada projection greatly distorts land area. And this is because the latitudes get stretched out the farther away you get from the equator because of how
- mapping on a cylinder works. And so places like Greenland, which appear as the size of Africa on the Mercer projection, in reality are a lot
- smaller. And so with all of these things considered, I'm going to put it at B tier because the scaling is really bad, but it is also useful for navigation and
- it is and it is basically used in all mapping services.
