- In chemistry we are interested in the transformation of a certain starting material to an interesting target compound. Often this is achieved by a sequence of chemical reactions. This perception is symbolic for the way chemical transformations are performed nowadays. Right now, chemistry is a linear science.
- And this is not only the way how we deal with chemical transformations. It is also the way we manage our energy, materials and waste industries... ...as well as our general way of living: We are living and managing our economy in a linear way without thinking about the impact of our actions. With many chemical compounds this is problematic. Especially regarding the by-product of our fossile energy economy: CO2
- This is the way how humanity got into a life-threatening global crisis: The anthropogenic climate change. To overcome this and other crises, we must transform our way of living from a linear one-way to a cyclic form. Since 2018, more and more people are getting aware of this problem. One movement which bundles these efforts is Fridays for Future.
- This movement has may sub-groups: Students for Future, Parents for Future, Scientists for Future and many more. One group which is still missing is a branch which represents chemistry; the science which contributed a lot to the origin of this crisis... ...but which can also help to find ways out of this crisis.
- We are Daniel, Istemi and Sebastian - three initiators of Chemists for Future. Our first project will be the establishment of sustainable chemistry in higher education. To accomplish this, we want to bring together the best researchers who can contribute their knowledge to reach this goal:
- in the form of an online lecture. With this video you are just watching the introduction. In a series of other videos, several experts will highlight certain aspects of... ...the probably most important topic of our favorite science, chemistry:
- How do we shape this science for the future and how do we shape our future through chemistry? The range of topics includes for example: Contributions to green and sustainable chemistry...
- ...chemical CO2 sinks ...and sustainable synthesis using light. Also, we have one general remark: Chemists for Future is supposed to be a movement. Everyone is invited to participate!
