- Good day. And today we're going to have a quick introduction into Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller.
- Death of a Salesman was first performed in 1949 on Broadway in New York City and was an immediate success. It won the Puliter Prize and the New York Drama
- Circles uh critic circles award. The production also ran for 742 performances before it closed. And since then, Death of a Salesman has become one of the most
- performed and adapted plays in American theatrical history. So, when we take a look at what is the theme to the death of a salesman, Arthur
- Miller tackles the social question of the effect of the capitalistic American dream myth that has on an ordinary family. Miller taps into the hopes and
- the fears of not only an American but a global public. After all, the American dream kind of has that universal human question about the nature of what is
- happiness and what is success. The idea of aging and family responsibility are also tackled. Your main character, Willie Lman, also
- has the quality of an everyman whose struggle to attain his dreams of success resonates within us all.
- Then when we look at the Lmens, we start off with the dad, Willie Lman, who's the main character. He is the salesman of the title. He's considered the husband
- and the father. Willy's loyal love and wife is Linda Lman. Willy's 34year-old elder son is Biff Lman. And Willy's 32-year-old
- younger son is Happy Lman. Other characters we have is the next door neighbor who's called Charlie and
- Bernard is Charlie's son and an important successful lawyer. We also get to see Willy's wealth wealthy older brother by the name of
- Ben. Ben has recently died and he appears only in Willy's daydreams. We also get to meet the woman. The woman was Willy's mistress when Happy and Biff
- were in high school. Now taking a look at Arthur Miller's way he produced the play. It is not just the
- themes of the play that ensures its success. Miller crafted an innovative form and he was so skilled with his language that he
- created a style in his play that was accessible to any audience and yet at the same time he produced a multi-layered piece of theater.
- Next let's look a little bit at the playwright himself. Arthur Miller was born in Manhattan, New York City in 1915. And the Miller family moved to
- Brooklyn in the early 1930s because the Great Depression had plunged his family into great financial difficulty. These years of poverty and struggle
- influenced many of his plays. Then Arthur Miller's first big break, his play All My Sons debuted to positive
- critical reviews in 1947 and it was a big hit with audiences as well. This play established him as a significant voice in American theater.
- Two years later, with Death of a Salesman, Miller did indeed dare and risk more. With this play, Arthur Miller soared to new artistic heights, and
- critics began to regard him as one of the greatest 20th century American playwrights.
- Now, after that, he had several hit plays culminating with The Crucible, which debuted on Broadway in 1953. This was during the height of Senator
- Joe McCarthy's congressional investigations into unamerican activities of US citizens. This mostly meant their involvement with the
- Communist Party. In the early 1950s, it was a very tense time in American history. The cold war between the US and the Soviet Union made
- many Americans extremely worried about the safety and the future of their nation.
- Now Miller reflected the paranoia and the hysteria of this time in his play The Crucible. And at the same time, Miller was called to testify before the
- House Unamerican Activities Committee. He was asked to tell the committee members the names of the US citizens who were involved in communist activities.
- Miller refused and thus was cited with a contempt of Congress which is a serious crime. This conviction, however, was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1958.
- Once again, he has won a Tony Award for Death of a Salesman, but as you can see, Arthur Miller actually won seven Tony Awards overall. He's also won the
- Olivier Award, the Obi Award, the John F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award. He's won national book awards and the 2001 medal for distinguished
- contribution to American letters. And lastly, when we ask him a little bit about the death of salesman, Arthur
- Miller say states, "Willie is foolish and even ridiculous sometimes. He tells the most transparent lies and exaggerates mercilessly and so on. But I
- really want you to see that his impulses are not foolish at all. He cannot bear reality. And since he can't do much to change it, he keeps changing his ideas
- of it. Thank you so much for stopping by for an introduction to death of a salesman. If
- you would like me to go ahead and do some analysis and summaries of the acts of a death of a salesman, leave some comments down below. Let me know what it
- is you'd like me to cover. Perhaps you'd also like me to cover All My Sons or The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Leave a comment down below if you'd like to see
- that as well. And as always, I appreciate it if you subscribed. Take care.
