- Anything [music] we do, anything we practice, we just get into the field of activity without [music] proper knowledge. When we expect
- that I do this and I should get this result, we do not even know how we should do the action in the right manner. Such a
- person is the wise or intelligent amongst [music] human beings? Because even though we got human body, even though we got intellect, everybody is
- not necessarily [music] intelligent. [music]
- [music] >> [music]
- [music] >> Apparently when we see someone doing something there is some movement [music]
- there's some action we call that as karma. And when there is no movement, no action, [music]
- we say it is a karma. But philosophically karma and a karma is not doing a [music] particular
- action or not doing a particular action but it [clears throat] depends upon what produces result.
- >> [music] >> What is action?
- [music] What is inaction? [snorts] About this even the great seers sages are deluded
- because in a very humorous and uh simple style. A mere movement of the hands is not what is called as [music] karma. When it is with a sense of purpose
- for [music] something then it is meaningful action and we call that as work. [music]
- So what is work [music] and what is that which is not work? Huh? About that [music] even the sages are deluded. When you say sages means those who are
- knowledgeable [music] scholaristic in understanding whether an action is done and why certain actions produce certain result. certain actions do not produce
- [music] any result or at least not the desired result that we want. And therefore Bhagwan says that I shall teach you
- all about action and what is to be known about action. In short, [music] what constitutes work?
- What work should be done? [music] what work should not be done. All this I shall [music] explain to you and yet
- moka say [music] a shabbat knowing which you shall be free from all evil [music] that which is inospicious which means you shall be free from
- sorrows the cause of sorrows that is sin here and there's also a subtle thing that [music] we must Note now that we proceed into the portion where karma
- yoga [music] gives us the qualification for nana or knowledge [music] and it is said again and again that moa
- is gained through [music] knowledge. Sri Krishna already indicates here that knowing you shall be freed. So knowledge of the truth frees us from
- bondage which is created out of >> [music] >> ignorance. But also anything we do, anything we practice, we just get into
- the field of activity without proper knowledge [music] of the field of the activities. the action that is to be [music] done, what should be the intent
- motive behind the action, what should be the attitude [music] in the action. All this is important for us to use action to benefit [music] us rather than bind
- us. >> [music]
- >> So [music] having explained that what is to be known, Bhagavan says
- action should be known. Huh? That which is forbidden action also
- should be known. So in short, you must know what [music] are your duties and you should be able to do those duties, know how to do those duties. So
- therefore know what is karma, know what is v karma, know those actions which should be completely avoided harmful activities.
- Just as we tell a child never put your hands in fire. It is not some restriction. It is a protection that [music]
- you just do not put your hands in naked fire. It'll burn. it will harm you. And therefore certain actions for example those which are addictive, those which
- are harmful, those which are violent, those which create anger, those that get response of anger [music] from people. Now these are
- things which we call as sinful. And again whenever I use the word sin I will keep reminding [music] that sin in the vantic sense is meant in a larger
- context that that which rebounds back to us in the form of regret, guilt and sorrow that actions should be avoided which are
- harmful to others. [music] And we must always remember you cannot harm others without harming yourself. And you cannot
- even do good to others without having done good to yourself. Also you should know what is inaction [music]
- because most people think just doing nothing is inaction because Gi
- that the path of action or even the results of action is not easy to understand imponderable
- it is. [music] No. So Ghana very difficult to understand why Bhagwan is saying here [music] even what we call sometimes as common
- question mundane [music] questions by people you'll find two people are doing the same action yet one seems to be gaining profits the
- other seems to be losing. Huh? People eat the same diet but one falls sick the other you know becomes healthy. So very often we wonder is this law of action
- reaction and we want to see just simple oh this I do I get this reaction. The answer is not that simple because behind every action [music]
- there are innumerable laws at work that governs the action and the [music] result of action in a very simple way. Yeah. Some people say my luck is bad, my
- destiny is bad. No, when they say something like this, [music] why? Because somebody is lucky. I am not lucky. So is luck a matter of chance
- [music] or is destiny a matter of chance or it is some whims and fancy of some god who makes one person rich other born in a poor family expects all of them to
- behave in a particular manner otherwise eternal heaven or eternal hell. Is it as ridiculous or as simple as all that is mentioned? [music]
- See even in an action many people will say that I do such a good action I'm such a good person then why does you know God give me you know illness see
- you may be a very nice person you might do even charitable work but if your diet is not right [music] now also we say oh diet I'm following healthy
- diet people follow just strength But those diets may not be suitable for you in the climatic zone that you are in
- ethnically that you've been brought up with. Again, what is popularized is not necessarily right. Now, we always think
- that we are good, we [music] are right, then why do we suffer? And therefore, the famous question now why do good people suffer? Because [music] even good
- people can do something good in a wrong manner. When we do certain things, even if they are good, a good thing can be done wrongly.
- What is this implication? We do not know everything. And therefore here again when we expect that I do this and I should get this result
- we do not even know how we should do the action in the right manner. Again people think that actions average out. So if I have done eight good actions and two bad
- [music] actions my life should be absolutely beautiful. But it doesn't average out. Yeah, for the eight good actions that
- you do, you'll get good results. But the two wrong actions you have done, you'll get results for that also. No, for example, [music]
- somebody drives on the road and then hit someone. He got frightened and he ran away. But no justification rather than helping that person whom
- accidentally he must have hit. But he ran away and hit it and run is a crime. I mean if it's not deliberate it's not right. But frightened he ran away. Years
- later he was feeling very guilty about it. And when he could afford he donated an ambulance to help those who [music] are hit or meet an accident on the
- roads. Now for the hit and run somewhere in life or next life somebody will hit and run but
- an ambulance will be waiting for him. [music] So the law of karma, the law of action means action is governed by so many
- laws. And when someone says I did not do anything when you don't do what you're supposed to do, that inaction also
- produces results. So what is action? What is inaction? Very often you'll find siblings elder brother himself does not go and get the ice cream from the
- refrigerator. makes the younger one do it but he doesn't do anything at all. So when the mother catches the little one is in trouble but every mother knows
- that the one who didn't do it but the one who made that little one do it. So there are so many things about [music] action
- and all of it we do not know and therefore we must [music] understand action. What is the motive behind the action?
- [music] Intent behind the action. What do we call as [music] action? What results
- come through certain actions? [music] what results we should what what actions we should avoid all this is not very easy to understand that's why Krishna
- says I shall tell you the secret [music] and what Krishna says is the principle that we have to follow and when we apply it to any action
- we will be able to understand it and we will not get disappointed nor [music] out of ignorance be anxious
- about the result. So [music] Bhagwan says that one should know this and I [music] shall explain to this clearly to you.
- 18th verse of this fourth chapter of the Bhagat Gita is coined in such a way [music] and these are called as contemplative
- verses. It's immediate meaning will be a paradox [music] or can create even confusion. And there's a story in the Mahabharat
- where it is said that when Shiasa [music] wanted to write this epic, he had these ideas flowing through him. So he needs
- someone to well let us say type it or a stenographer to write it for him, a script uh someone who will script it. So it seems that Brahma the creator said
- that the best tenographer is none other [music] than Ganesha. Now when you get the best of person to work for you, they come with their own deal and [music]
- contract. So Ganesha said I will write for you but I have no patience that you suddenly have a writer's block.
- You have to continuously go on dictating. No for example when we are doing online we can't pause. We have to continuously go on speaking. So you
- dictate I will go on writing. If you stop dictating, I walk [music] out. Now, Viasa had a human body in that time. Ganesha is a dwata. Suppose he has to go
- for nature's call or eat or drink water. Obviously, he'll need a break. And Ganesha said no breaks. Yeah. I mean, he did want because he had those
- ideas flooding and if someone is slow, your ideas get blocked. So both had asked for each other. So it is said that whenever
- Viasa [music] wanted a break, he would make such a statement in the Mahabharat and [music] Bhagat Gita is part of it also. He would
- make such a statement that [music] would take even Ganesha time to think. So viasa's part of the contract was that you will not write down anything that
- you have not understood. So this is one of those tricky verses but thanks to our guruv that becomes very simple to understand [music] and in
- fact Sri Krishna himself explains it. >> [music]
- >> ki a karma. Whosoever pashid would see
- a karma karmi see inaction in the action. One who can see inaction in action and one who can see action
- in inaction. The play of words in English also. Yeah. So and you know most people if they don't understand anything of someone they say
- must be a very intelligent person. So it seems here one who sees
- inaction in the action and action in inaction. Such a person Bhagwan says buddhan manushiu such a person is the wise or intelligent
- amongst human beings because even though we got human body even though we got intellect everybody is not necessarily intelligent. So being intellectual is
- not being intelligent. Bhagan says such a person amongst human beings is intelligent.
- Such a person indeed is united. Such a person is a yogi. Such a person is a performer of all actions
- or can say as one who has fulfilled all actions. Now if you look at the verse one who sees action in inaction inaction
- in action utterly confused but what is action and what is inaction [music] is to be understood obvious is when I'm doing some
- motion I will say I'm acting and if I sit without doing anything I am [music] inactive. Now physically I may be inactive and anyone who is
- mentally very active physically will be inactive. And therefore those who are physically not doing labor
- but intellectually and mentally working are able to produce great results. While doesn't necessarily be that a person who works
- hard hard like a you know laborer of course produces some result but not necessarily such astronomical results.
- So result of a particular action with a lot of exertion might be very little and sometimes if an action is done efficiently
- and it seems hardly anybody is doing any action yet a lot is produced. So here itself we can see the difference. So sometimes by
- [music] saying something you may not be effective but by not [music] saying you can be effective. Here
- action that produces result is called as action. [music] And that inaction
- that produces result is as good as action only. [music] That action that does not produce result
- is just wasteful activity [music] and therefore it is as good as inaction. So what Krishna says is that that action that produces result [music]
- including that action when done with ego and egocentric selfish desires with attachment that produces bondage
- that action is called as [music] action. That action which is done with the right attitude as taught in the Bhagat Gita the spirit of karma yoga without
- attachment [music] for the well-being of everybody but without any I sense of doership or sense of attachment for the result [music]
- doesn't produce any bondage and it is as good as [music] inaction and if one understands The secret of it such a person performing all actions
- remains inactive means remains [music] silent and such a person even in silence [music]
- can produce a lot [music] and in fact has gained the result of all action and [music] that is equipoise and peace. Such people are called as [music] wise
- because they have fulfilled what is needed through action and that is to get peace and happiness. We see others having [music] something and grass is
- always greener on the other side or we think that by having more we will become happier. So one who has recognized that infinite atma sees the one infinite
- [music] everywhere. There is no actor separate then for what the action is [music] done. There is no instruments that are
- separate from it. There is only Brahma. >> [music]
