  1. We Begin the name of Allah all praise and glory be to Allah and may his finest peace and blessings be upon his messenger Muhammad and his family and
  2. his companions and all those who adhere to his guidance as advertised Dr Khaled and the rest of the
  3. zaka office here at Masjid Isa have bribed me into interrupting my series about keys to reflection on the Quran and just tonight inshallah we're going
  4. to try to dedicate these next 10 minutes or so on some broad principles regarding the howto of zaka a zaka crash course and I'm going to humbly request for you
  5. to be patient with me and defer your questions so after I will be at your service to field all of them inshallah here in the
  6. Mah okay so what is zaka zaka is zaka zaka is the third pillar of Islam zakah is the twin of Salah all throughout the Quran you find the Believers are those
  7. who uphold the Salah and pay the zaka we uphold the rights of Allah and recognize that that's Inseparable from the rights that he gave his creation the creation
  8. of Allah subhanahu waala and the function or purpose of zaka as Allah subhanahu wa tala said in the
  9. Quran oh Prophet take from their wealth wealth a charity this mandatory charity to to purify them and to cause them
  10. growth so purify them from what purify them from greed purify them also from stained earnings obviously not Haram earnings because if you earn something
  11. in an unlawful prohibited way you're not allowed to keep it all together but something could have been a little dishonest maybe you were cutting corners
  12. on checking in and checking out something like this right things that go below the radar you get purified from your greed you get purified from
  13. whatever may be un wholesome about your earnings and it causes them growth growth in your wealth growth in your sense of generosity even growth in your
  14. reputation on Earth and your reputation inshallah in the skies so that is the idea of zaka how do we understand zaka I want
  15. you to think about zaka in very specific terms little bit technical but useful zaka is the right of the poor to your wealth a
  16. portion of your wealth that Allah has made the poor entitled to but not just your wealth all the lawful money or lawful wealth that you have agency over
  17. you have control over why do we say it like this because if it's unlawful to begin with it you keep your Capital but you dispose of all of the profit on that
  18. for sure and this requires repentance and if it's not your wealth lawful but not your wealth like what like you're taking care of the wealth of an orphan
  19. who inherited at three years old or the wealth that you've signed off to your child but in a college fund you are still responsible to pay zaka on that
  20. wealth and feel free to grow it as well but that is the idea it is the right of the poor that is due to them from the wealth that you have control over that
  21. is halal this also reminds us of another important point which is that rights don't die debts don't evaporate so once it's due it's due if it's late and you
  22. could have done something about it this is blameworthy this is punishable if you didn't pay for years you should retroactively calculate this the debts
  23. don't die it's their right in your pocket right now that's how you think about it okay who pays zaka the Shar the Revelation identified for
  24. us a marker for significant wealth it's called the nisab nisab is like the marker or the threshold it designated that if you have simply put in today's
  25. terms the equivalent of about 85 grams of gold which is what today in March 2025 that's about $88,000 that is called the threshold or
  26. call it the exemption limit you're no longer exempt now if you have Holdings of that amount or higher once you reach that limit that exemption limit you
  27. start counting a year and I'm not going to be able to explain opinions this is sort of what I am recommending to you based on what I was taught or the likes
  28. right once you hit that limit you begin to count a year after that year you don't determine when the year is the year is determined
  29. by when you first hit the nisab the threshold a year after the threshold if you're still at the nisab or more that's called your zakah due date one year from
  30. when you first hit it if you're still at it within one year then you owe 2 and a half% on the total that you're still holding on to if you can't get your
  31. finances figured out on the lunar calendar which is the Islamic calendar which is what matters most in the sight of Allah then you have to compensate for
  32. those 11 days because the lunar calendar is 354 days the solar calendar that is common nowadays is 365 so to compensate for those 11 days if you don't know how
  33. to do it lunar considering what's dispensed to you and the disclosures and the documents from the okay fine it's 2.57 basically 2.6% now to compensate
  34. for those 11 days so that is who's paying zaka someone at the threshold for a full year still above a threshold 2 and a half or
  35. 2.6% of it all got it okay bah now how do you calculate it you basically take all of the money that you have in your safe and under
  36. your mattress and behind your flat screen TV and should I continue and the Investments but we'll defer that and the gold that you're
  37. invested in the jewel the silver you're invested in the majority will say if this is something you've acquired for wearing the sisters for instance with
  38. gold than the brothers and the sisters for silver that doesn't count according to the majority to the exclusion of the we're not excluding thef I'm just
  39. classifying here legally speaking so if it's set aside you have bullion you have gold you have invested in the gold Mark whatever it's going to be you add that
  40. to your currency you add that to your savings all of that together that's sort of your your gross
  41. as said very beautifully and very simply he says you have your Holdings not your earnings your Holdings because the prophet sallam
  42. said a person is not obligated to pay a charity on his horse his car or his servant right his employees no not the stuff you're spending on not the stuff
  43. you're consuming and that's why the majority said even jewelry if your your primary intention is that you're just wearing it it's for wearing so your
  44. Holdings you have your Holdings he's then you add to it the debts the money owed to you that you expect you'll get back by your zakah due
  45. date and then you added those two subtract the debts that you owe to others by your zakat due date don't say I owe 300,000 on a house or don't say I
  46. have 300,000 of college what amount of that is due by your zakat date you can subtract that cuz that's technically not your wealth even if it happens to still
  47. be sitting with you for whatever reason so your everything plus debts you expect paid back in time plus minus debts that you need to pay out and then you have
  48. your amount you pay two and a half% on that is this clear okay now if you have a business or you are in Investments zaka is due also not just on currency
  49. and gold and but also your trade goods your inventory not your your fixed assets so if you have like a car dealership or you
  50. have a uh Supermarket or you have a building or house that you're renting out those are fixed assets those are not for sale you might sell them one day I
  51. might sell my socks one day if things get really difficult but it's not a trade asset right now and so those you don't pay zaka on you pay on what is
  52. making money right if you're not selling anything in your property you're just renting this is your service leasing it out then the income from the rent is you
  53. add it to your money consider that money that's it if you have a supermarket you're not selling the supermarket or the refrigerator but your inventory the
  54. stuff on the shelves the not the fridge but the milk because that's the one for sale you basically take all your trade inventory your trade goods at wholesale
  55. value because you're not sure you're going to profit so the wholesale cost of all of that and you add that to what your capital or your your Holdings
  56. that's how you do it with business when you have that not your fixed asset your trade goods you take that you subtract from it all
  57. the stuff what that you have to pay out your payable invoices by your zakat due date and you add to it right the things you
  58. expect paid in the receivables by your zakat due date then you pay 2 and a half% on it all is that clear of course the stock market if you're able to do
  59. this you should as well if you're able to know what part of the companies you're invested in are actually cash and trade goods right not just headquarters
  60. and ships and satellites and the likes then that's how you do it as well it's the same thing the notion of being in the trade goods world the inventory
  61. world the business World which brings us to our last point alhamdulillah we're doing okay on time which is most people nowadays have a retirement plan this
  62. retirement plan is usually in the stock market as the F Assemblies of the world have mentioned and and Dr Salah one of the leading scholars in his book modern
  63. applications of zakah explains you owe 1 of your retirement plan your 401k in zaka every year if it is Diversified in the market why they said
  64. because listen we said zaka is owed on what you have control over if you try to take your 401k out right now you're going to realize you
  65. don't have control over about 40% of it penalties and taxes and likes so now you owe on 60% only of your 401k but they said wait is it cash no it's not cash
  66. gold no not it spread through the market to mitigate sort of the the falling sectors of the market right so what happens they went to The Experts of the
  67. of the stock world and they said about how much if you had to give a round number would this be represented in an on average the liquidity the cash in the
  68. market and the trade goods in the market they said let's say about a third so about a third of the companies you're invested in this is because we have no
  69. choice if you don't if you're not financially literate you can't do the specific math you say a third of the 60% I have access to today is zable so
  70. that's 20% so what's 20% of two and a half half of 1% so you take your portfolio your retirement plan at half a percent and you pay that annually to who
  71. there is Ayah 60 in the that tells you the eight places you can spend your zaka the poor the people that are hungry the people that are evicted right the
  72. poor that's number one greatest most deserving and those that are needy those that are hand to mouth they're not hungry per se but they're one paycheck
  73. away from being stuck right they C they can afford food or maybe housing but not tuition maybe not gas that sort of thing they're constrained those are m
  74. and those that work on the collection and dispensation of zaka and those whose hearts are to be reconciled people that are on the edge
  75. on the edge about to leave Islam have some Prejudice or the likes you're not bribing them you're taking care of them so they don't have to make a decision
  76. because of their worldly condition that could sabotage their afterworld salvation that's the idea on the fence inside or out at least
  77. according to the hanis and malakis and then it says what and captives or prisoners even political prisoners perhaps can be
  78. justified through this and those stuck in debt they owe debts that they can't climb out of in the cause of Allah in the path of
  79. God we and the stranded traveler someone needs so long as you're giving them and you're intending by that this is from my zaka even if you pay this a little early
  80. you can count it as part of your zaka that you spent out you can do it this way among those eight and Allah subhanahu wa tala knows best be with us
  81. after if you want to Probe on a personalized level
